Russian President Calling for United Front Against Afghan Drug Trade
Russia is dealing with a problem very similar to one waging in the United States – drug addiction. According to a recent news post, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is concerned about the serious threat posed to his country and considers it to be the biggest problem plaguing the development of Russia and the health of its people.
President Medvedev has called on the international community for help in the prevention of the global spread of drug crimes that fuel terrorism. He is aiming to appeal to those countries also dealing with the effects of drug trafficking, including significant parts of Europe, Canada and the United States.
In his plea, he also asked that the fight against drugs be removed from politicization of any kind. He believes that including political games in the fight against the drug threat undermines any joint international efforts between partners and will weaken their anti-drug coalition.
Russia has developed an anti-drug policy that is designed to carry the country into 2020. This strategy is part of the country’s efforts to thwart trafficking and increased drug problems as a result of its proximity to Afghanistan.
A sharp rise in heroin consumption has been measured throughout the world, thanks to the Afghan drug trade. Russia especially has experienced significant increases, making the anti-drug forum a primary focus for the president. While not all details of his anti-drug strategy were immediately available, he is calling on a united front from all leaders to overcome the drug problem.
